The changed deposit details scam

This scam is used mostly against property purchasers but could equally well be used against tenants.

What happens is that the scammers hack into the email correspondence between the parties.  Then when the buyer (or tenant) are about to pay the deposit, they send an authentic looking email saying that the bank details for payment have been changed and giving their own bank details.

Needless to say, once the payment is made the bank account is emptied and the money lost.  As these scams are normally carried out by foreign crime syndicates there is little chance of getting your money back.

Don't give out sensitive information by email, particularly bank details.  Be aware that this might happen, and if you get an email changing details, always double check by phone.
