General information about the Landlord-Law kits
There are times when, in order to enforce your legal rights, you need to go to court. However, most people are completely unfamiliar with the court system and find it very intimidating. Even people who are quite happy making presentations to large audiences or hardened business types will go to pieces when faced with addressing a Judge in court.
However in many cases there is no reason why you should not represent yourself. Dealing with a basic claim for a money judgement or simple claim for possession is not rocket science. Anyone with reasonable intelligence can do it, so long as they have a bit of help.
This is the purpose of these kits. The author, Tessa Shepperson, is an experienced property lawyer and has attended court hearings many times herself, particularly in claims for possession. She can remember very well the panic of not knowing where to go or what to do, from her first hearings! These kits aim to take away the fear of bringing your own claim, by giving you all the information you need.
The heart of the kits are the instructions, which are written in a friendly and approachable style. They explain the law and how it applies to your case, tell you what preparation you need to do first, and give detailed guidance on completing the paperwork, and on the things you will need to watch out for. They also tell you when you need take legal advice, should things become problematic. However most purchasers of these kits have had no difficulty in obtaining their court order, after following Tessa’s step by step instructions.
Kits 1 and 2 are available to annual Landlord-Law members to download free of charge from the Landlord-Law web-site. The other kits, and kits 1 and 2 for non members, are delivered via our training web-site www.housinglawtraining.com. This runs Moodle software, an open source course management system used by Universities, schools and training organisations all over the world.
Each kit has its own section on the training web-site where the course materials and instructions can be downloaded and used. There is also an online discussion forum where students can ask questions of Tessa, and have online discussions with each other about their cases. The training site is regularly updated and new material added from time to time.
When you purchase your kit you will be enrolled onto the training site as a student and given an enrolment key which will allow you access to the relevant kit. Once you are enrolled on the kit course, you will be able to use it for a period of 186 days (or six months). This should be long enough for most cases to be completed, but if you need more time, this can be purchased for an additional payment.
All kits contain the following:
- Detailed instructions describing preparation you need to do before bringing your case, how to complete the forms, problems that may occur, how to deal with court hearings, and guidance on enforcing the judgement
- All relevant paperwork which may need to be served before the issue of your case, such as possession notices (with covering letters) and letters before action
- Several 'kit' versions of the relevant court summons form, drafted specifically to cover the type of claim involved (many self calculating).
- A blank copy of the relevant court summons form, in case the kit versions are not suitable for your case
- Other court (and other) forms relevant to the type of claim concerned. Some of these will be blank court forms, others may be adapted by us for the type of claim concerned, some will be our own forms (for example self calculating schedules)
- Other helpful content including articles on relevant matters and useful forms
- An online discussion forum where you can ask questions of your instructor (Tessa Shepperson) and also discuss your case with other students on the kit course
- Telephone support
Telephone Support
With every kit you can claim up to 1/2 hour telephone support from Tessa Shepperson. This is free of charge with the purchased kits, but there is a fee of £40.00 (inclusive of VAT) for the annual members versions of kits 1 and 2. However please note the following:
- The advice will be given in one telephone call only
- The call charges will be at your expense (i.e. you ring us)
- The advice to be provided at a time convenient to Tessa Shepperson
- However the advice will be provided as soon as possible after it has been requested, and not later than seven days at the most (normally it will be immediately or within a day or so).
- Additional telephone advice can be purchased by arrangement
